Gabions: A useful construction method in retaining earth for coastal erosion, banks, reservoirs or where a decorative wall is not needed. They are manufactured from welded mesh and are like baskets which can be filled with waste rock by hand or machine. They are fast to erect and are stepped back on the next course to form a batter. They are not attractive but can be allowed to naturalize with the local wild shrubs and flowers and will soon look less sterile.
