Yew
Taxus baccatta Evergreen slow growing hardwood tree useful for hedges away from farm animals often grown in churchyards because of its so say ability to regain life after appearing to be dead. Taxus has always appeared to be a funny name for a tree has it anything to do with taxes? History tells that Yew was used by bowmen either for the arrow or the bow it has great flexibility in cut or un- cut state. The Fastigiate varieties are useful for topiary. When bound with protective wire they can be shaped quite readily. My experience of training 11 unruly trees in to shape goes back 12 years when the titled Lady of the large estate requested our services the trees had matured with out care and I broke the edge off a pair of loppers so hard was the wood. One Taxus to look out for is the var: Taxus standishii erect gold in colour and a statement in a heather border, rockery or near a formal pond.
